It's definitely not that.

My guess is that's it's an issue with transparency, with transparent
pixels being rendered as black in the image itself. I'd make sure you
are actually using the GIF image formatter (and not naming JPEGs as
GIFs). This would cause the image formatter to create the
BufferedImage with a TYPE_INT_RGB instead of TYPE_INT_ARGB, and the
transparent pixels would show up as black.
