Andrea,
One more thought. DEM's and DTED's are considered rasters. I wonder if a hill-shading algorithm would work? Once, I was messing around with some hill-shading code and ended up creating a topo-map...HA. Anyway, I found the code in a python script at
http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal .You'll have to look in the sample scripts for it. It would be a snap to port to java. It was like 20-30 lines of code.
If that doesn't help, I would look on the web for raster algorithms.
Hope that helps,
Martin

Subject: [OpenMap Users] watershed area
Hi Don,
The algorithms to calculate watershed area are based on elevation data. I
would need a grid of elevation data to perform slope, flow paths and
draining area calculations.
Cheers,
Andrea

Hi Andrea,
What's your criteria for designating a watershed area based on
elevation data?
Just so you know, the TerrainLayer uses DTED data instead of DEM, but
that should be OK, too.
