Here is a version that uses a JPanel with BoxLayout.
Here
http://navicon.dk/AIS/statuslight.png is how it looks with a LAF
that uses shaded toolbars.
Notice that the LAF (Substance) handles the nested JToolbar's in the
main toolbar so that nested toolbars do not get shaded.
